George's season came to an end on Aug. 8th amid racial controversy. He claimed that The Mets "would rather promote a Gary Carter or Keith Hernandez to the fans so parents could point to them as role models for their children , rather than a Darryl Strawberry or a Dwight Gooden or a George Foster".
George said he was misquoted , the Mets said they released him because he was ineffective as a part time player. His remarks came after being benched for 16 days and then replaced by Lee Mazzilli.
None the less, George was one of baseballs premiere power hitters. And, like him or not, he was ours.
