My NY Mets sketchbook. I create an entry after each Mets game or commentary on the crazy stuff going on around the team.

Sorry, but Wise wasn't doubled off of first, he had just hit a single, there was only one out, all runners were free to advance. Wise had to be tagged out, there was no force-out in place, and Stanton would have batted even if Wise had been tagged out. The fact is that Izzy served one up, over the plate, and Stanton crushed it.
Murphy vapor locked. It happens. No need to say he can't play baseball. He can. The Mets have a lot of average or below average hitters on the team. Murph is hitting .320. Give him a break. Izzy served up the game winner, and the offense was offensive before the 10th except for Duda's blast. Missing Beltran yet?
Stanton wouldn't have batted because the assumption is that he would have been intentionally walked with 1B open if they had gotten Wise. Collins confirmed this after the game, saying he would have walked Stanton to get to Peterson. Murphy is a one-tool player. He can hit baseballs. But Joe's right, he can't PLAY baseball. Terrible defensively at every position they try him at, terrible baserunner. It's an embarassment having him out there on the field whenever he's not in the batters box.
I'm not in agreement here, Joe. Considering all the injuries, Murphy, as much as anyone on the team, has been a key reason the Mets are where they are right now. He's hitting .382 since the All-Star break. Granted his fielding leaves much to be desired at times, but he's not a 1st baseman (although his play at Washington in the 9th the other day was Hernandez-like). When all is said and done, he's still a great hitter. He's also still young. Just needs a bit more work in the field.
Murphy's bat is great, but his fielding? Well, we all saw what he's capable of last night. Why not shift Bay over to right and put Murph in left so he does the least amount of damage?
Sorry for all the disagreements. But I think at this level, Kid or no Kid, the fundamentals of baseball can't be ignored. I agree. Murphy is a great hitter. He works hard. Plays hard. But he can't play any position they put him at. To me that is not a Ballplayer. he's a DH.
Did Murphy give up 3 straight singles followed by a monster HR?
No But he did allow Stanton to get up with the bases loaded to be able to hit the Monster Homerun.
Are we seriously looking at Murph as the problem? Try looking at the starting pitching. That's who should be writing on the blackboard. Murph shouldn't be the scapegoat. Minaya is to blame. The Wilpon's are to blame. We are lucky to be over .500. If it weren't for likes of Murphy, we'd be holding hands with the Dodgers. Please. Next week it will be someone else.
All, I'm a huge fan of what Daniel Murphy contributes to this team. Did you see his throw out at third base when the Nats were closing in on the game-winning run July 31st. That was very Hernandez-esque. Don't knock him for making 2-3 bonehead plays. He's helped us win a number of games we probably shouldn't have had a chance to win either.
